Thanks to its mechanical resistance, flexibility, reliability of joints and chemical resistance, polyethylene is suitable for being used in underwater pipelines structures.

It is possible to prepare the pipeline (in whole or in segments) on the mainland in order to simplify the assembly operations. Afterwise, tow it to the installation site and then lay it down at the bottom of the sea.

Considering that polyethylene has a specific gravity lower than water, the use of ballast is required to sink the pipeline.
